2017 will see a number of large bores on the river Severn, but luckily for us as runners, there will also we one on a Friday night in late May, meaning a great run through sunset in to darkness as the Bore chases you up the river towards Weir Green. Back in 2013, the last time there was a Beat the Bore at night run, it was well received and everyone enjoyed the experience of being chased by a wave you could hear bur not see.
“I ran course the day before the 2013 Bore at night event and was amazed at how the wildlife moves as the bore approaches, in particular the birds, as a warning that something is coming. Then you hear the roar of the bore as it picks up speed to nearly 14 knots, and in my case just pipped me to the finish” race director, Simon
Once again this event will be raising money for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, which provides life saving emergency care to people who cannot be reached by road, or are in a state so critical that they require the specialist skills of our team at the scene of the accident. This not part of the regional 999 response service, but works closely with NHS hospitals.
It’s a charity entirely funded by local people just like you

The run itself will begin at the bottom of the only hill in the event, approximately 30mins before sunset. All runners will have reached the river bank before darkness.
Now the challenge really begins, as the bore will have past Arlingham and be moving upstream at about 6 knots towards Epney (approx 1/2 mile from where runners meet the river). The bore will continue to increase in speed as runners make their way to towards Weir Green, the finish.
Just one small problem, the bore will reach 14 knots, doesn’t have stiles to climb over, doesn’t need a head torch and won’t be worried about getting wet!
